Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
In order to ensure student safety and wellbeing, each Highline middle school participates in a mental health and substance use prevention and intervention program. The goal of the SBIRT program is to promote students’ physical, emotional and social well-being, as well as to minimize adolescent drug, alcohol, and nicotine use.
This year, Evergreen High School and Mount Rainier High School are piloting this program. This program works to bridge gaps during this challenging time and connect students with ongoing supports - these may include mental health counseling, substance use services, therapeutic groups, mentorship, and crisis intervention resources.
Since 2018, this program has helped identify the strengths and needs of over 3,000 Highline middle school students districtwide, connecting them with services and resources to help them succeed.
This year, middle and high school students may participate in a survey called “Check Yourself” during class and could receive follow-up from the support team as needed. Participation is voluntary and does not impact class performance or grades. Responses are confidential, though parents and legal guardians may request to review responses.
